James Cameron, director of the Avatar series, shared his thoughts on the coexistence of film and artificial intelligence (AI).
On the 12th, a virtual press conference was held for Avatar: The Fire and the Ash. Director James Cameron attended the event to discuss the film. Avatar: The Fire and the Ash follows the story of the Sully family, who fall into deep grief after the death of Jake and Neytiri’s eldest son, Neteyam. As the clan of Ash, led by Baran, appears before them, an even greater crisis unfolds across Pandora, now engulfed in fire and ash.
Director Cameron stated, “I’m aware of the concerns in Hollywood and the entertainment industry regarding AI—specifically, the fear that AI might replace actors and writers. And when we talk about AI here, we’re referring to generative AI.”
He continued, “One thing I firmly believe is that we must never replace actors. Actors are an absolutely essential element in all storytelling. AI may be able to generate images, but those images lack originality and consistency. Real actors, on the other hand, interpret, understand, and design their characters themselves.”
