The film “Night on Earth” (directed by Jung Soo-hyun; written by Kim Yoon-sun and Jung Soo-hyun) recently completed filming and officially wrapped production.
Set in a world thrown into chaos by the sudden appearance of mutant jellyfish, “Night on Earth” follows Soo, a young man who has withdrawn from life and hides away in a bathtub, as he encounters people at an illegal clinic called “Manbok Pension” and gradually begins to reexamine life. Adapted from author Im Sun-woo’s short story of the same name, the film blends fantasy imagination with a poetic coming-of-age narrative.
The project gained recognition when it won the BH Entertainment Award in the Jeonju Cinema Project: Next Edition competition at the 26th Jeonju International Film Festival. Following the festival, full-scale production began, and filming wrapped up in October.
Director Jung Soo-hyun, a creative newcomer active in production, planning, and acting, shared,
“I wanted to portray a young person who, having lost himself amid disconnection and isolation, finds warmth by connecting with strangers who have chosen ruin. I hope the film’s rich texture of life will remind viewers of the beauty of humanity.”
Additionally, Park So-yeon, director of the TVING original series “Pyramid Game”, joined the project as a creative director, further enhancing the film’s quality.
In the cast, Park Yu-rim, Shin Ryujin, and Kim Dan play characters chasing different lights in life.
Park Yu-rim (Drive My Car, Ballerina) plays Hee-jo, the owner of Manbok Pension — a solitary figure whose restrained emotions and subtle acting ground the film.
ITZY’s Ryujin plays Kang, Hee-jo’s assistant and an employee at the pension. Expanding her career from singer to actress, Ryujin transforms into a boyish yet warm-hearted character, showcasing a fresh and compelling charm on screen.
Kim Dan, who drew attention for his portrayal of Moon Woong in “Try: We Become a Miracle”, plays Soo, a reclusive young man lost between life and death. He delicately expresses the inner turmoil and sensitivity of youth, marking a memorable new appearance.
Joining them, veteran actress Kim Gook-hee appears as a guest at Manbok Pension — a woman who has lived her life for her family but now begins to reflect on herself. Known for her authentic performances in “The Priests”, “Family Plan”, and “Moving”, Kim is expected to deliver a heartfelt and nuanced portrayal.
Actress Kim Si-a (Miss Baek, Kill Boksoon) makes a special appearance as “the girl,” a character whose gentle face contrasts sharply with her rough speech and behavior. Running away with her boyfriend to Manbok Pension, she reveals the vulnerability hidden behind her tough exterior, leaving a lasting emotional impact.
Meanwhile, “Night on Earth” has entered post-production and is aiming for invitations to major domestic and international film festivals ahead of its official release.
